Transitioning to Progressive Lenses

by | Nov 28, 2025

As we age our vision needs change with many of us requiring lenses that can correct for multiple vision concerns. One of the best types of lenses that offers this correction are progressive lenses. In today’s blog we will be providing some useful information on transitioning to progressive lenses.

What are Progressive Lenses?

Progressive lenses are specialized lenses that are multifocal and able to correct for both nearsightedness and farsightedness at the same time. Progressive lenses have a smooth gradient rather than having lines that delineate the different vision zones of the lens like bifocals or trifocals. Progressive lenses are generally divided into three fields of vision, the top of the lens is for distance vision, the middle for intermediate distance vision and the lower portion of the lens is for near vision. This type of lens provides a great deal more comfort for wearers who need vision correction at multiple distances, especially when compared to single vision lenses or bifocal lenses.

What do I need to know when transitioning to Progressive Lenses?

Wearing progressive lenses can present a bit of a challenge when you are transitioning from a different style of lenses as you will need to train yourself to look through different parts of the lens in order to see at different distances. This can lead to a bit of an adaptation period before you experience the best results from progressive lenses. There is also a high chance that you will experience some peripheral blur when wearing progressive lenses, this blur can be affected by lens design, prescription strength and frame size but has been minimized as much as possible through modern lens technology. This reduced peripheral vision can cause safety concerns when driving or performing other physical tasks so it is best to make sure that you get the progressive lenses that can best suit your lifestyle.

We hope we have been able to provide you with some useful information about transitioning to progressive lenses. If you have any questions about progressive lenses or have other vision concerns, please feel free to contact us.
